This cover design, which happens to be Candace Bushnell’s 1920′s Greenwich Village apartment, caught my eye on so many levels because it touches on so many different styles. I love large-scale floral arrangements as shown here. You don’t have to spend a ton of money. Target or Home Goods, for example, have all different size glass vases that could suit any style floral design. I use bamboo a lot in my own designs because it’s eco-friendly and makes a great visual statement, and it adds height and texture. As long as there is balance in the design – it works. Her use of fun accessories such as the metal box on the coffee table and the great “pop” of color with the flowers adds to the space nicely. It’s so important to always throw in something that says “you.” This particular room has fabulous natural light that perfectly compliments the stunning crystal chandelier. The arch in the windows gives a great architectural feel. The most successful rooms are the ones that have that “personal touch” and flair because who wants to be boring?
Cindy Crawford has proven that she not only can walk the walk, but she can design comfortable, affordable spaces that are beautiful. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have Malibu as your backyard! She creates colorful, comfortable family spaces that convey an air of youthfulness and fun. She has 2 young children and her home is a reflection of her life, and she does it well.
Cindy Crawford and Randy Gerber’s Malibu home also has a beautiful yet comfortable room that boasts spectacular views of the gorgeous Malibu white sandy beach that is their backyard! Not too shabby! I love the use of navy and teak because the room literally looks like it could flow right out into the ocean. The lighting fixture is great because it’s eclectic. This room has a nice energy to it and is well balanced.
Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bridgehampton house is just adorable. It is the quintessential cozy beach retreat from their hectic Manhattan lives. I love the simplicity of the architecture. The wrap around porch is perfect for relaxing.
Carlos Souza is an international public-relations director of the House of Valentino. This three-bedroom apartment in an 1860′s building was completely renovated to better suit Souza’s personality. One of my favorite furniture designer’s is Mies van der Rohe and his Barcelona bed in black with eye-popping throw pillows against the black wood floor is genius. Notice the great branchy flowers that add the right amount of texture to the room. Love it!
Souza also has simple yet chic library with a vintage Le Corbusier chaise and to add texture, a sari is draped over the chaise from Jaipur.
Michael S. Smith captured my eye not just because the property is in Bel Air, but because of his 2 adorable dogs. Being a huge dog lover myself, I had to look further at his story. The grounds and the pool were eye catching to me.
His living room I thought was so different with the trees inside rather than outside. Again, texture, color, balance and scale all work wonderfully in this room. It is a dream to have a marble-floored sun room opening onto a terrace. His pieces are so interesting; the mother-of-pearl-encrusted Japanese table was found in Brussels, and the ceiling lantern is by jamb. Being a Textile Designer also, his use of all the different fabrics were also eye caching.
Rajna & Naeem Khan both moved to Manhattan in the late 70′s from Mumbai to pursue careers in fashion and design. They currently live in a loft in SoHo – which is my dream! Their living room has cool lighting, which I am always a big fan of. Lighting can change an entire look of a space. I love the color of the tufted ottoman instead of a boring coffee table. The Buddha adds a nice touch of spirituality to the room as well.
Ben Stiller and his wife Christine Taylor designed what started out as a 1920′s style hacienda house that they transformed into a functional kid-friendly house they can really grow into as their family grows. When I look at this picture I think of how stylish and fun the space looks. I particularly love the Moroccan style light fixture and sisal rug to add texture. The beautiful plants make this a great outdoor living space.
The Lucite chair with purple tufted cushion is one of my favorite chairs in the book. It exudes chic, modern design. I would love to have this chair in my bathroom.
I was always a big fan of Sarah Jessica’s personal style and her home in the Hampton’s shows she has a very specific style in her interior design as well as her flair for fashion.
